Lumphini Park

Lumphini is the big central park, with a lake, paddle boats, an outdoor gym and a running loop that fills at dawn and again after work. It sits on Rama IV with Silom on one side and Sukhumvit beyond it, which makes it the one piece of green most visitors to this city can reach on foot.

Why this page will not simply say free. Every travel site says entry is free. Probably it is. What we could not find, on any Bangkok city page that would open for us, is a sentence saying so. The city’s public-space record for the park carries a fee table, and every line in it is for hiring space or filming commercially, with no visitor admission row at all. An absent row means unrecorded, not free, and this site does not convert one into the other.

One rule worth flagging, because the sources fight about it. The city’s own record for the park says cycling is not permitted inside it. The widely repeated claim online is that bicycles are allowed between 10:00 and 15:00. Those cannot both be right, and the city’s page is ambiguous about whether the line is a general rule or a condition attached to booked activities. If you were planning to ride here, plan on walking until somebody clears it up. Drones, smoking and alcohol are prohibited on the same record.

Timing. Gates from 04:30 to 22:00, seven days. The hours are what make the park useful: it is open long before the heat arrives and long after it has gone, which is more than can be said for anything else on this list.

What we did not confirm. When those hours were set, because we could not retrieve the announcement behind them. And anything at all about the monitor lizards, which are real enough in other people’s photographs but not something we are going to describe from other people’s accounts.
