Mae Nam & Bang Por

Mae Nam runs along Samui’s north coast, and Bang Por is the stretch at its western end where the land climbs away from the water. Administratively they are one subdistrict. For a visitor they are two quite different propositions, and the scores say so plainly.

Down on the beach, Santiburi scores 9.2 for location and Explorar 8.7. These are flat, walkable, on the sand. Up at Bang Por, Panorama scores 7.7 and Code Samui and TUI BLUE both 8.0. The gap between the two ends is 1.5 points, the second widest among the areas we cover, and it is not noise: it is a real difference between being on a beach and being on a hill a drive from one.

That is why this page carries a warning the others do not, and why it only applies to half the area. Budget for a car if you stay at the Bang Por end. We know from staying at Panorama that a 50cc scooter will not make it up the hill there with two people on it, and it is not the only property up there with a steep approach. It is telling that several places on that stretch, Code Samui and Panorama among them, run their own shuttle. Hotels do not staff a shuttle up their own driveway unless the driveway is a problem.

The two halves split on value scores too. The three up at Bang Por rate value 8.4 to 8.6, which looks like the location penalty showing up in a different column. Down on the beach, Samui Blue Bird rates 9.7 for value and Explorar 9.0.

Samui Blue Bird deserves a line of its own. At 9.7 averaged it is the highest-rated property we list anywhere on Koh Samui, with the best cleanliness score on the island at 9.9 and a perfect 10 for wifi. It is also the thinnest evidence of our six here: 223 reviews on Booking.com and only six on Agoda. The Booking sample is real; the Agoda one is barely there.
