Koh Phangan at a glance

Koh Phangan is the island north of Koh Samui in Surat Thani province. The Tourism Authority of Thailand describes it as less developed than Samui, with more than half its area national park, and names Khao Ra as its highest point.

There is no airport: the Tourism Authority said so in 2017, and we found no newer official statement. Everyone arrives by boat. Lomprayah’s catamarans cross from Samui in about 30 minutes and continue to Koh Tao and the mainland, the car ferries run from Don Sak, and the Haadrin Queen crosses from Samui to the Haad Rin side. The island is best known for the Full Moon Party at Haad Rin, which the Tourism Authority calls a huge draw for young travellers. It happens on one beach, and the rest of the island is spread across very different bays. We cover seven areas: Haad Rin in the south-east, Thong Sala and Ban Tai on the south coast, the west-coast beaches at Haad Chao Phao, Haad Yao and Haad Salad, Chaloklum in the north, and the Thong Nai Pan bays in the north-east.

When to goThe Tourism Authority of Thailand gives October to December as the green season for Samui, Phangan and Koh Tao, with rain peaking in November and the crossings choppier. That is the Gulf's low season while the Andaman coast is in its high season.
